JCCA Policies and Guidelines
JCCA Awards Policy and Procedures Revised: May 2009
  1. Calculation
    1. All calculations for the annual awards shall be done for the time period January 1 through December 31 of a given year. A copy of the final tabulations will be provided to the editor of the Chin Chit Chat and the JCCA webmaster.
    2. Awards such as Registry of Merit, Dam of Distinction, and Sire of Distinction are subject to continual calculation, to be updated quarterly if possible.
    3. All calculations are to be done exclusively from the documentation by the American Kennel Club (AKC).
  2. Top Twenty Chin
    1. Top Show Dog and Bitch
      1. These awards shall be awarded annually and be of similar design. These permanent possession awards and all the Japanese Chin receiving these awards must be owned or co-owned by a JCCA member in good standing during the entire competition year.
      2. Points to determine the awards shall be calculated from Breed wins, Group Placements, and Best in Show All Breed wins. These tabulations will be based on the Phillips System (the official JCCA tabulation) as follows:
        1. Best of Breed shall receive one point for each dog defeated.
        2. Group Placements:
          1. Group One shall receive one point for each dog defeated in the Toy Group less the Japanese Chin entry, inasmuch as the Chin are previously included in the Best of Breed points.
          2. Group Two shall receive one point for each dog defeated in the Toy Group less the Japanese Chin entry, inasmuch as the Chin entry and the entry of the Group One placing breed.
          3. Group Three shall receive one point for each dog defeated in the Toy Group less the Japanese Chin entry, inasmuch as the Chin entry and the entry of the Group One and Two placing breeds.
          4. Group Four shall receive one point for each dog defeated in the Toy Group less the Japanese Chin entry, inasmuch as the Chin entry and the entry of the Group One, Two, and Three placing breeds.
        3. Best in Show shall receive one point for each dog entered less the obedience, agility, and rally entries and the Japanese Chin entry, inasmuch as the Chin are previously included in the Best of Breed points.
        4. The awards shall be given to the top point total for each sex. The dog or bitch, owned or co-owned by a JCCA member, with the greatest point total shall be designated Top Show Japanese Chin, JCCA for the year and the trophy designated as such. The opposite sex trophy shall be designated top dog or bitch as applicable.
        5. Calculations of the awards shall be continual through each month of the year from AKC publications; and the current top twenty will be published in the Chin Chit Chat, space permitting. Should calculations become inaccurate or lost, the Awards Committee may purchase the top twenty reports from the AKC. Further calculations may continue from the date.
        6. If no statistician is available to sit as a member of the Awards Committee, the top twenty reports can be purchased bi-monthly from the AKC to be published in the Chin Chit Chat and on the JCCA webpage.
        7. The "New Titles" report is provided to the Awards Committee electronically from the AKC at no cost to the JCCA.
        8. In addition to the above awards, dogs, owned or co-owned by JCCA members, who are within the top twenty in ratings, except for top dog and top bitch, shall receive a certificate stating the year and the ranking.
  3. Breeder of the Top Show Chin
    1. This permanent award will be given annually to the breeder of both the Top Show Dog and Top Show Bitch owned or co-owned by a JCCA member.
  4. Top Chin Award
    1. This will be awarded annually to the Japanese Chin, owned or co-owned by a JCCA member, who has defeated the most Japanese Chin in Breed Competition based on the Phillips System, per calculations based on AKC publications.
  5. Top Obedience Chin
    1. This is an annual permanent possession award awarded to the top obedience Chin owned or co-owned by a JCCA member.
    2. Calculations shall be made by averaging the three qualifying scores, per AKC publications, resulting in a title. These scores are provided to the Awards Committee by the owner of the Chin and will be verified by the Performance Chair. The Chin earning the highest average will be declared the Top Obedience Chin.
    3. In the event that there are two or more titles earned by Chin during the calculation period, the Chin with the highest average will be the Top Obedience Chin. In the event of a tie, the title requiring greater skill and training takes precedence over those requiring less. As in Section II, certificates may be issued to Chin ranking two through twenty.
  6. Top Agility Chin
    1. This is an annual permanent possession award calculated in the same method as in Section V.
  7. Top Rally Chin
    1. This is an annual permanent possession award calculated in the same method as in Section V.
  8. First Performance Title Earned by a Japanese Chin
    1. This is an annual permanent possession award awarded to the Japanese Chin, owned or co-owned by a JCCA member, who is the first to earn a given performance title.
    2. The titles earned are provided to the Awards Committee by the owner of the Chin and will be verified by the Performance Chair.
  9. Performance Champion
    1. This is a permanent possession special award awarded to any Japanese Chin, owned or co-owned by a JCCA member, who earns their first performance champion title. Subsequent championship titles in the same event will be honored with a certificate and medallion.
    2. The championship title earned will be provided to the Awards Committee by the owner of the Chin and will be verified by the Performance Chair.
    3. Performance Champion Titles are as follows:
      1. Obedience - OTCH
      2. Agility - MACH or PAX
      3. Rally - RAE
      4. Tracking - CT
  10. President.s Award (for service to the breed)
    1. This award can be given to an individual or an organization or a group. This award shall not be limited to members of the JCCA. The award may be given more than once annually or not at all. The JCCA President may solicit input in determining the award, year to year, which may be diverse in type. This is a permanent possession award.
  11. Top Stud Dog and Brood Bitch
    1. An annual permanent possession award to be awarded to the Top Stud Dog and Brood Bitch, owned or co-owned by a JCCA member, for a given year. The calculation will be limited to one calendar year (January 1 through December 31) of the completion of AKC conformation champion titles of get or produce respectively. In the event of ties, more than one award will be given.
  12. Registry of Merit
    1. The Registry of Merit (ROM) title is allowed to all Japanese Chin that qualify.
    2. To qualify, a stud dog must have sired at least five American conformation champion get, and a brood bitch must have produced at least three American conformation champion produce.
    3. A stud dog that has sired 12 American conformation champion get shall be awarded the title Sire of Distinction (SOD). A brood bitch that has produced seven American conformation champion produce shall received the title of Dam of Distinction (DOD).
    4. The Awards Chair will send the AKC new titles report and AKC stud book to the JCCA webmaster each month. The webmaster will add this data to the registry database. The registry tittles are dynamically updated and viewable on the JCCA website.
    5. If a qualifying dog or bitch is not listed in the JCCA registry, the owner or breeder should contact the JCCA webmaster and provide the relevant information, including the identities of the champion offspring and the dates of the titles earned.
    6. New ROMs, SODs, and DODs will be provided to the editor of the Chin Chit Chat by an automated online tool on the JCCA website. These will be printed in the Chin Chit Chat as space allows.
    7. JCCA members owning or co-owning qualified dogs or bitches may apply to the Awards Committee for a certificate of merit by identifying the recipient of the ROM, SOD, or DOD title and the date published in the Chin Chit Chat.
  13. Medallions
    1. A small medallion shall be awarded to Chin owned or co-owned by a JCCA member that has completed an AKC title.
    2. These medallions will be awarded to the Chin receiving titles in conformation, agility, and obedience.
    3. A small medallion will be awarded to any Chin owned or co-owned by a JCCA member that completes and passes AKC Canine Good Citizen (CGC) Testing. It is the responsibility of the owner to provide the Awards Committee with a copy of the AKC CGC certificate.
    4. All new titles will be reported in the in the Chin Chit Chat.
  14. National Specialty Awards
    1. These permanent possession awards, donated by the JCCA, are given at JCCA national specialties:
      1. Catherine Cross Memorial Award for Best of Breed
      2. Mary Bransford Memorial Award for Best Bred By Exhibitor
      3. Judith Camacho Memorial Award for Best Veteran
    2. All member-dedicated National Specialty Awards, from this time forward, are to be posthumous, after a quorum of JCCA members vote in agreement.
  15. Local Specialty Award
    1. JCCA will offer each local Japanese Chin Club a trophy for Best of Winners once per year.
    2. The local Japanese Chin club will need to apply for the award at least six weeks prior to the show and list the JCCA.s trophy prominently in their premium list.
  16. Versatile Chin Award
    1. This is an annual permanent possession award awarded to any Japanese Chin, owned or co-owned by a JCCA member, who shows versatility in the breed ring and/or performance events.
    2. Versatility is defined as earning one title in three of the following events: conformation, obedience, rally, agility, and tracking. The titles earned are provide to the Awards Committee by the owner of the Chin and will be verified by the performance chair.
    3. This is an award that can be earned more than once, but no title can be counted more than one time. Subsequently earned Versatile Chin awards by the same Chin will be numbered (i.e., Versatile Chin Award 2, Versatile Chin Award 3).
  17. All permanent possession awards must incorporate the club logo.
  18. The Awards Committee shall:
    1. Be appointed by the JCCA board.
    2. Be in possession of all club awards and certificates.
    3. Maintain records necessary to determine the recipients of club awards. Copies of these records should be provided to the editor of the Chin Chit Chat and the webmaster as soon as they are completed.
    4. Make sure awards to be presented are available at the designated awards function. When practicable, the annual awards will be presented at the JCCA National Specialty banquet.
    5. Be responsible for any necessary preparation of awards, such as printing of certificates, engraving, etc.
    6. Divide the duties of the committee among the committee members as they see fit.
    7. Provide the JCCA treasurer information and request for funds for the coming months and submit receipts and expenditures with each request.
    8. Transfer all records, medallions, awards, and any JCCA property to succeeding committee members within 30 days of change of committee. Failure to comply with this stipulation should result in indefinite suspension and/or fine from the club for every seven days a member is non-compliant. Should a member allow their membership to lapse, or resign from the club, and not return archival materials valued by the JCCA, that person could be prohibited from rejoining the JCCA for their lifetime. The JCCA secretary should note the failure in club records.
    9. Receive, consider, and pass to the JCCA board any proposed changes to the awards policy.
